Veterans Hearing Care
Community Care Audiology Built Around Veteran Hearing
At Precision Hearing Care, our veterans hearing care in San Antonio, TX is delivered through the VA Community Care Network (Group NPI 1386343341) and TriWest, so eligible veterans see a Doctor of Audiology without leaving Bexar County — no primary care referral required. Each visit covers a full diagnostic evaluation, tinnitus screening, and prescription hearing aid recommendations when indicated, all documented in your VA record at our Babcock Rd office near the Audie L. Murphy VA Medical Center.
How to Use Community Care for Hearing Services
Follow these six steps to be seen at Precision Hearing Conservation through the VA Community Care Network — no primary care referral required.
Call VA Audiology
Call the VA at (210) 617-5300 to request an audiology appointment. No primary care referral is required.
Ask for the First Opening
Ask the scheduler for the first available appointment date so you know whether it falls inside the 28-day wait window.
Request Community Care
If the appointment is more than 28 days out, say: "I'd like to request Community Care based on the 28-day wait time standard, and I would like Precision Hearing Conservation as my preferred provider."
Verify the Referral
A few days later, call Community Care at (210) 949-3850 (option 1) to confirm Precision Hearing Conservation was listed.
We'll Call You
Once the referral is confirmed and completed, our office will call to schedule your appointment — typically within 1-2 weeks.
Attend Your Visit
Bring your VA ID. Your visit includes a diagnostic evaluation, tinnitus screening, and prescription hearing aid recommendations when warranted — all documented in your VA record.
Navy Veterans Who Know Service-Connected Hearing Loss
Both owners — Dr. Joseph Pratt and Dr. Nathan Ortiz — are US Navy veterans who built their careers running the Navy's two largest hearing conservation programs at Naval Stations San Diego and Norfolk. They've evaluated thousands of active-duty sailors for noise-induced hearing loss and tinnitus, which means JBSA-area veterans, military retirees, and TRICARE families walk into appointments with someone who already knows the equipment, the deployments, and the documentation. Hearing aids and tinnitus relief plans are tailored — never templated.
30-Day Hearing Aid Trial Period
Every set of hearing aids fitted at Precision Hearing in San Antonio, TX comes with a 30-day trial period. Wear your devices where life actually happens — at work, around the dinner table, on a job site, and out across San Antonio. Real-world listening is the only test that counts. If they aren't the right fit within 30 days, bring them back so we can adjust them, exchange them for a different model, or explore another option together.
Veterans Hearing Care FAQs
Common questions San Antonio veterans ask about Community Care and TriWest hearing services — how the referral works, what's covered, and how to schedule at our Babcock Rd office.
Walk through the six steps above — call VA Audiology at (210) 617-5300, request the first available appointment, and if it's more than 28 days out, request Community Care with Precision Hearing Conservation as your preferred provider. No primary care referral is required.
Once Community Care confirms the referral, our office calls to schedule — typically within 1-2 weeks. Need help understanding the workflow before you call the VA? Reach our patient care coordinator at (210) 695-4708.
Yes. TriWest is the federal administrator for both TRICARE and VA Community Care in the South-Central region, and Precision Hearing Care is in-network. That covers active-duty service members and their dependents on TRICARE, retired military families, and veterans being seen through Community Care. The CCN and TriWest route referrals to us using Group NPI 1386343341.
If you're not sure which program applies to your situation, our patient care coordinator can walk you through eligibility when you call (210) 695-4708. The same workflow handles active-duty hearing tests, retiree exams, and dependent appointments — most JBSA military families are scheduled within a week of confirming coverage.
Hearing aid coverage under Community Care depends on the veteran's specific authorization, but most veterans who are referred to Audiology qualify for premium prescription devices with no out-of-pocket cost — and we routinely see veterans without any hearing loss service connection still qualify. We fit major brands — Oticon, Phonak, ReSound, Signia, Starkey, and Widex — and select the technology that fits the patient's lifestyle, not whatever is easiest to dispense. Real-ear measurement verifies every fitting.
Many veterans also benefit from devices with built-in tinnitus relief programs, given how often hearing loss and tinnitus appear together after noise exposure. Long-term follow-up, repairs, and reprogramming are handled at the Babcock Rd office. To explore options, browse our hearing aids page or call (210) 695-4708.
Service-connected hearing loss reads differently when the audiologist already knows what a flight deck, gun line, or engine room sounds like. Both Precision Hearing owners served as US Navy audiologists — Dr. Pratt at Naval Station San Diego and Dr. Ortiz at Naval Station Norfolk, the Navy's two largest hearing conservation programs — and were among only two or three Navy audiologists nationwide running that work.
For JBSA-area veterans, military retirees, and active-duty families across San Antonio, that translates into faster intake, more accurate documentation, and counseling that doesn't feel transactional. The Babcock Rd office is minutes from the Audie L. Murphy VA Medical Center, BAMC, and Loop 410 northwest. Call (210) 695-4708 to schedule, or see our tinnitus treatment page for service-connected ringing.
