Custom Hearing Protection
Custom-Molded Earplugs Built for Your Ears
Noise-induced hearing loss is permanent — and almost entirely preventable when the protection actually fits. Our custom hearing protection in San Antonio, TX begins with a precise impression of each ear, then pairs the right material and filter to how you'll use them. Whether your day is spent on a flight line, behind a band, in a deer blind, or riding Loop 1604 home, custom plugs deliver consistent attenuation without smothering the conversation and cues you still need to hear.
Built on the Navy's Largest Conservation Programs
Few Bexar County clinics bring this depth of conservation experience to a custom earplug appointment. Owners Dr. Joseph Pratt and Dr. Nathan Ortiz are US Navy veterans who ran the service's two largest hearing conservation programs at Naval Stations San Diego and Norfolk — protecting thousands of active-duty sailors from harmful noise. That same OSHA- and NIOSH-grade discipline shapes every set of plugs we fit, whether for occupational crews, musicians, hunters, motorcyclists, or patients who simply want quieter sleep at home.
Custom Hearing Protection FAQs
Common questions about custom hearing protection in San Antonio — the styles we fit, how impressions work, how long a set lasts, and how much sound the plugs actually block.
At Precision Hearing we fit a full range of custom-molded earplugs based on how you'll actually use them. Occupational and industrial plugs deliver consistent attenuation for crews working around heavy equipment, aviation, or manufacturing noise. Musician plugs use flat-attenuation filters so music stays clean — just quieter — and shooter and hunter plugs can be paired with electronic options that pass through normal conversation but clamp down on a gunshot.
We also fit custom motorcycle plugs, sleep plugs, and swim plugs, plus communication earpieces for in-ear monitors. Your Doctor of Audiology recommends material, filter strength, and color during the visit. Call (210) 695-4708 to plan your fitting at our Babcock Rd office.
Fitting starts with a quick otoscopic look inside each ear to confirm the canal is clear and healthy. From there, your audiologist places a small foam oto-block deep in the canal and injects a soft silicone impression material that captures the exact shape of your ear in a few minutes. The impressions come out cleanly, and the appointment itself usually takes about 30 minutes.
Those impressions are sent to our partner lab, where your plugs are crafted in the material, filter, and color you selected. Most orders are ready in two to three weeks, and we fit and verify them in a follow-up visit before sending you home. Call (210) 695-4708 to schedule your impression appointment.
With normal use and basic care, a quality set of custom earplugs typically lasts three to five years — sometimes longer. The silicone or hybrid material is durable, and most filters can be swapped if your noise needs change. The most common reason for replacement isn't failure — it's fit. Bodies change, weight fluctuates, and ear canals slowly reshape, which can loosen the seal over time.
Care is simple. Wipe each plug down after use, store them in the provided case away from heat, and bring them in once a year so we can check the seal and clean the filters. If they ever feel less snug or you notice noise leaking through, call (210) 695-4708.
Custom hearing protection is designed to reduce harmful sound while preserving what you actually need to hear. For most patients that's the whole point — keeping speech, music, and situational awareness intact while clamping down on the dangerous spikes. The level of attenuation comes down to filter choice, which we match to your specific exposure during the fitting.
Musicians often choose plugs that drop volume by 15 to 25 decibels without distorting the frequencies, while industrial crews may need higher attenuation across the board. Sleep and swim plugs use a solid block design with no filter. We walk through the trade-offs in plain language at our 170 Babcock Rd office.
